Best Types of Additional Storage for Your College Apartment

By Victoria Robertson on September 5, 2020

Storing items in a small, college apartment can be difficult, especially given the space that you’re dealing with. More often than not, students end up leaving items back home in order to accommodate their small living space.

So, rather than bringing everything with you and creating clutter, or leaving things at home to accommodate your small space, you can ensure your college apartment has additional storage space for all of your belongings.

Below are six types of additional storage that you can utilize in your college apartment.

1. Compressed Containers

Storage containers are largely big and bulky, which means that many students opt to avoid using them, as they take up more space than they save. That being said, that’s not necessarily always the case.

For instance, there are compressed storage containers that can fit in small spaces, such as the top shelf of your closet or underneath your bed, providing you with more storage space that doesn’t ruin the aesthetic of your room.

Simply shop for the containers that make the most sense for your situation and you’ll have plenty of storage to save those things you truly want to keep with you.

2. Dual Purpose Furniture

Not all furniture serves one purpose, and there are plenty of furniture items out there that actually offer hidden storage space for your belongings. For instance, living room ottomans can offer hidden compartments to hold onto miscellaneous items, such as blankets or pillows.

In addition, TV stands can offer extra cabinets and shelves for storage space, housing items such as books or movies.

Many individuals even look to items such as bookshelves to house their school materials and save much-needed desk space for other items such as laptops and notebooks.

3. Vertical Storage

Storage space can be quite limited on the floor, and there’s only so much work that you can do to keep all of your belongings there. In order to avoid limiting your floor space, you can look into vertical storage space to save your belongings.

For instance, hooks and shelves on the wall can provide extra storage without compromising the room that you have. These make perfect spaces for blankets, books, and other miscellaneous trinkets that you enjoy having.

Additionally, vertical storage space can provide you another way to display aesthetically pleasing items in your space to add more décor without taking up space.

4. Smart Closet Space

As previously mentioned, using closet space is a great way to save room in your living area. Aside from simply hanging clothes or storing your shoes away, you can also add additional storage (such as compressed bins) to your closet to utilize every nook and cranny available to you.

Some individuals also use coat racks outside of their closets to store bigger, bulkier items and allow the space in their closets to store more items that wouldn’t normally fit.

Every inch of closet space should be used to its full capacity in order to save space elsewhere.

5. Shelving

Shelving space is the perfect way to add storage to your living room, bedroom, or even the kitchen or bathroom. Shelving can include wall shelves, floor shelves, or even hidden shelves in closets or cabinets.

Bathroom shelving can house those items that pile up on the bathroom counter, while kitchen shelving can store your food items or kitchenware without taking up much-needed cabinet space.

In addition, shelves in bedrooms and/or living rooms can add extra space to keep things that you typically would pile up on tables and desks to avoid the look of clutter in an already compressed space.

6. Rented Space

And finally, as a last resort, you can always look to rent storage space on campus for those items that you will need, but don’t necessarily need at the moment.

For instance, many students leave their winter clothing items at home to save on storage space, picking them up later in the year as they are needed. However, if a return trip home for more items isn’t something you want to add to your list, renting a storage space to hold those items until they’re needed saves you quite a bit of time.

Plus, renting a storage space gives you a chance to grab what you need as you need it, and store items that you don’t as you realize it.

Again, a college apartment is a small space to keep your things, which can create issues, especially when you’re looking to bring a large number of belongings with you.

The above six alternative methods of storing your belongings are a great way to ensure you can bring everything you need along with you, without compromising your space.

Of course, there are always a number of ways to create storage space, no matter how small your living space, so be on the lookout for tips and tricks to increase your storage capacity!
